Pair of 12 inch Table Globes by CARY on turned mahogany stands, with moulded cross stretchers.

Circa 1820.

The Terrestrial dated 1831 and labelled G & J Cary, 86 St James St, London. The Celestial dated 1816 and labelled J & W Cary, Strand, London. (Cary moved from the Strand to St. James’s in 1820).

That they appear to have been made at different periods in the Cary family's history is misleading, that they are a pair is not in doubt. The celestial issue of 1816 remained unaltered for many years as the astronomical information remained unchanged, unlike national boundaries which frequently required alteration. hence the many re-engraved terrestrial globes of this period. Occasionally a later date is pasted over the earlier date.
